Role Mission

Detect, classify, and perform the initial handling of connectivity events affecting links, LAN, WAN, network services, and security equipment by executing the applicable playbook and correctly engaging internal teams or carriers, according to the company's responsibility matrix.

Essential Knowledge — Fundamentals:

  • OSI Model and TCP/IP stack, with the ability to locate the layer where the problem manifests.
  • IPv4 addressing, subnets, and VLSM; basic knowledge of IPv6.
  • VLANs, trunking, and network segmentation; concept of spanning-tree and its typical symptoms.
  • Routing: difference between static and dynamic routes; recognition of routing failure symptoms (asymmetry, blackhole, route flapping).
  • Essential network services: DNS, DHCP, NTP, and NAT — with the ability to isolate whether the incident is connectivity-related or service-related.

Essential Knowledge — Diagnostics and Tools:

  • SNMP: concept of OID, community, traps, and polling — the foundation of network monitoring in Zabbix and Nagios.
  • Command-line tools for triage: ping, traceroute/tracert, mtr, nslookup/dig, telnet, and netstat.
  • Interpretation of link quality metrics: latency, packet loss, jitter, and bandwidth utilization — and what each degradation pattern suggests.
  • Reading network topology and maps to determine the scope and impact of an incident.
  • Basic packet capture analysis (Wireshark) at an evidence-reading level, not deep investigation.
  • Basic knowledge of NetFlow/sFlow for identifying anomalous bandwidth consumption.

Essential Knowledge — Security and Access:

  • Firewall: reading rules, NAT concept, and identifying blocking as a probable cause of an incident.
  • Site-to-site and client-to-site VPNs: symptoms of tunnel drops and status verification.
  • Corporate Wi-Fi: concepts of SSID, authentication, roaming, and interference.
  • Basic knowledge of proxy and content filtering as a cause of application access failures.

Desirable:

  • CCNA certification or equivalent; alternatively, a technical degree with proven NOC experience.
  • Experience with Cisco, Fortinet, Palo Alto, or similar equipment at the level of reading status and logs.
  • Prior experience in engaging and escalating issues with telecom carriers.
  • Basic knowledge of MPLS and SD-WAN, common in distributed corporate topologies.

What is not expected from this position:

  • Configuration or modification of production network equipment.
  • Topology design, capacity planning, or tuning of routing protocols (BGP, OSPF).
  • Creation or modification of firewall rules — the role identifies and escalates; changes follow the change management process.
  • Forensic traffic investigation.
