Tasks and Responsibilities

About the company

FileScience backs up and recovers the business data that companies keep in cloud applications. Our backup jobs run for many customers and depend on third-party APIs that we do not control. Customers need more than an available service: they need data they can actually recover.

About the role

We are hiring a hands-on Senior Site Reliability Engineer to keep FileScience reliable for our customers. Some of the hardest failures are the silent ones: a backup that stops progressing, finishes with missing files, or reports success when it should not. You will work with the engineering team to identify these problems, improve monitoring and incident response, and fix reliability issues in production code and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Define how we measure reliability: establish service level indicators and objectives (SLIs/SLOs) for product availability and backup jobs, show what we can and cannot yet measure, and use the results to decide what to improve first.
  • Make failures easier to find: add logs, metrics, and traces that identify the affected customer and job, create useful alerts, reduce noise, and regularly verify that monitoring works and that alerts reach the right person.
  • Lead incident response: maintain incident tooling, escalation paths, and runbooks, diagnose problems, keep people informed, confirm service recovery, and follow up on fixes that prevent repeated incidents.
  • Verify that backups actually work: create checks that each customer's backups run at the expected time, capture the expected data, and can be restored, comparing source and backup data alongside product engineers and testing recovery.
  • Automate recurring operational work and deliver reliability fixes: work with product engineers on safer deploys, growing workloads, queue backlogs, and third-party API failures, testing changes before rollout, keeping a rollback path when possible, and verifying the outcome.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience keeping production systems reliable after launch, including incident response and continuous system improvement.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in AWS, covering services, networking, containers, storage, queues, and databases, investigating issues that involve both application code and infrastructure.
  • Experience building and maintaining observability, SLOs, useful alerts, runbooks, and recovery testing in production.
  • Ability to read, debug, and change production Python code and build reliable automation, with a practical understanding of partial failures, retries, idempotency, concurrency, and backpressure.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and safe production changes, including testing, rollback, and access controls.
  • Clear written and spoken English, good organization, and independent problem-solving, turning incomplete requirements into practical plans, prioritizing work, and communicating progress, risks, and decisions.

Nice to have

  • Experience with backup, synchronization, or data integrity systems, or with data pipelines that run for long periods for many customers.
  • Experience with OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Sentry, incident management platforms, or comparable tools.

Soft skills

  • Autonomy to investigate problems, identify next steps, make sound decisions, and drive the work forward without waiting for detailed instructions.
  • Adaptability to a dynamic environment, with shifting priorities and requirements that may be incomplete.
  • Clear communication to keep the engineering team informed and to bring in other people when their input is needed.
  • Practical judgment and persistence to see the work through to the end, valuing real production experience.

Work model and location

This is a remote position. Our tech stack includes Python and AWS, with ECS, Lambda, Step Functions, S3, SQS, DynamoDB, Aurora PostgreSQL, and CloudWatch.
