We are looking for a senior software developer, with a backend focus, to build and improve the services, integrations, and data structures that support ITpS products. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team and work on solutions that connect data, systems, and partner institutions.
We are looking for someone who combines technical depth, product vision, and care for sensitive data. We expect autonomy to make decisions, monitor production services, and turn surveillance needs into secure, observable, and traceable solutions. Leadership will be technical, with involvement in architecture, code review, mentoring, and delivery coordination; the role does not involve formal people management.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, test, document, and improve Python APIs and services, with clear contracts, versioning, and access control.
- Model and improve PostgreSQL data structures, including migrations, indexes, transactions, and query analysis.
- Build integrations with SUS systems and partner institutions, handling schema changes, reprocessing, duplicates, and partial failures.
- Implement asynchronous, scheduled, or event-driven routines when appropriate for the problem.
- Create validations and audit trails that preserve data integrity, provenance, and traceability.
- Maintain automated tests, continuous integration, and secure deployment and rollback mechanisms.
- Instrument services with event logs, metrics, and request tracing, identifying incident root causes and verifying fixes.
- Apply risk-proportional controls in the handling of personal and sensitive data, in compliance with LGPD and applicable ethical standards.
- Conduct code reviews, document relevant decisions, and support the team's technical development.
- Work in partnership with product, design, frontend, infrastructure, data, epidemiology, and institutions responsible for data sources.
Requirements:
- Solid experience developing and maintaining production systems with Python.
- Experience with at least one API framework, such as FastAPI, Django, or Flask.
- Proficiency in PostgreSQL, including relational modeling, migrations, indexes, transactions, and query diagnostics.
- Experience with APIs and system integrations, with explicit error handling and data consistency.
- Experience with automated testing, Git, and continuous integration.
- Applied knowledge of authentication, authorization, secrets management, and personal data protection.
- Experience with observability and investigating production failure root causes.
- Ability to make and communicate technical decisions, review code, and support others' work.
- Ability to read technical documentation in English.
- Interest in applying technology to public health. Prior experience in the health sector is not required.
Nice to have:
- Experience in public health, epidemiological surveillance, government data, or systems subject to audit.
- Knowledge of health standards and terminologies, such as FHIR, RNDS, LOINC, or ICD.
- Experience with data flow orchestration and analytical processing, using tools such as Prefect, Airflow, Dagster, dbt, Parquet, DuckDB, ClickHouse, or BigQuery.
- Experience with PostGIS or GeoPandas, vector search with PGVector, or language model-based applications.
Behavioral competencies:
- Ethical and respectful professional conduct, with courtesy in relationships, respect for diversity, and care with confidential information.
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, collaborating on deliveries, valuing different perspectives, and recognizing others' contributions.
- Willingness to share knowledge, document learnings, and support colleagues' development, reducing dependence on individual knowledge.
- Clear and respectful communication, with active listening to understand needs, clarify questions, and align expectations.
- Openness to giving and receiving constructive feedback and addressing differences through dialogue, with a focus on problem-solving.
- Organization and accountability for deadlines and commitments, communicating difficulties and risks in advance and seeking support when needed.
- Willingness to learn continuously and adapt to change, recognizing limitations and incorporating team contributions.
